Optimal Setting Adjustment
for Outlook Express 5.x


Go to "Tools" of Outlook Express Main window
Select "Options..." Options window will appear
Click on Read tab
Click on "Fonts..." button. Fonts window will appear
Select Japanese from the large menu
Select a Japanese font in "Propotional font" [e.g. UWJMG3 (SJIS), UWJGOT (SJIS), MS Mincho, or MS Gothic]
Select a Japanese font in "Fixed width font" if available
For "Encoding," select "Japanese (Auto-select)"
Click on "Set as Default" button, and "OK" to close "Fonts"


From "Options" window, click on Send tab
Under "Mail Sending Format," select "Plain text"
Click on "Plain Text Settings..." button, and Plain Text Settings window will appear
Select "MIME" for "Message format"
for "Encode text using," select "Quoted Printables"
Clear the check mark on "Allow 8-bit characters in headers" and click on "OK" to close the window

Click on Compose tab and select a Japanese font from "Font settings..." button for "Compose Font"
Click on "Apply" then "OK" to close Options window


From Outlook Express tool bar in main window, go to "View" then "Encoding"
Select "Japanese (Auto-Select)"
Go back to "View" and "Encoding," and click on Auto-Select to add a check mark.


When composing a new message, go to "Format" then "Encoding," and select "Japanese (JIS)"*

*Once you adjust the setting, you will not have to repeat the process.
